Dasha is the timing engine of the Vedic system. The idea is that life runs in planetary periods, each ruled by one of the nine, and the period you are in colours everything that happens during it.
The periods nest. A Maha Dasha is the major chapter and runs for years. Inside it, Antar Dashas run for months to a couple of years. Inside those, Pratyantar Dashas run for weeks to months. How the layers work together
Think of the Maha Dasha as the season and the Antar Dasha as the weather. A Saturn Maha Dasha is a long stretch of slow, structural, demanding work. A Jupiter Antar Dasha inside it is a warmer spell within that stretch, not a different season.
This is why people sometimes say a period was hard overall but contained a very good year. Both statements are true at different layers.
The nine period rulers
Sun periods are about visibility, authority and recognition. Moon periods are emotional, domestic and changeable. Mars periods bring energy, conflict and physical push. Mercury periods favour learning, trade and communication.
Jupiter periods expand, teach and generally feel generous. Venus periods favour relationships, comfort and creative work. Saturn periods are long, slow and structural, and produce the most durable results at the highest cost. Rahu periods are unpredictable and often involve foreign places or unconventional paths. Ketu periods turn inward, strip things away and favour research and spiritual work.
How to use a Dasha reading well
Match the activity to the period. Starting a demanding public venture in a Ketu period is possible and it will feel like pushing a car uphill. The same venture in a Sun or Jupiter period gets far more traction for the same effort.
Do not use it to wait. A long Saturn period is not four years of standing still, it is four years where the returns are slow and the foundations you build are the ones that last. Waiting through it wastes the one thing it is good for.
The numerological version
Traditional Vedic astrology calculates Dasha periods from the position of the Moon at your birth, which needs an exact birth time. The numerological version derives them from your birth numbers instead.
That makes them accessible to anyone who knows their date of birth, which is the whole point, and it is worth knowing that the two methods can give different results for the same person.
