Birth Number

Taken from the day of the month you were born. It shows the instinct you act on before you have time to think about it.

Also known as Mulank, Driver Number, Psychic Number

The Birth Number, called Mulank in Indian numerology, is the easiest number in your chart to work out. Take the day of the month you were born and reduce it to one digit. Born on the 7th, your Birth Number is 7. Born on the 29th, add 2 and 9 to get 11, then add 1 and 1 to get 2.

This number is your first reaction. Someone hands you a problem and, before your training or your manners get involved, your Birth Number decides how you feel about it. That is why it shows up so clearly in how you behave at home, under stress and around people who know you well.

How to calculate your Birth Number

Only the day matters. The month and year are not used.

  1. 1

Take the day of the month you were born, ignoring month and year.

  2. 2

If it is a single digit from 1 to 9, that is your Birth Number.

  3. 3

If it has two digits, add them together.

  4. 4

If the result still has two digits, add again until one digit is left.

Example for someone born on the 28th

  • Day: 28
  • 2 + 8 = 10
  • 1 + 0 = 1

Birth Number 1

Birth Number against Life Path Number

People mix these two up constantly, so it is worth being clear. The Birth Number uses only the day. The Life Path Number uses the whole date. The Birth Number is instinct, the Life Path is direction.

In Indian numerology the pair is described as the Driver and the Conductor. The Driver is your Mulank and it steers your daily behaviour. The Conductor is your Bhagyank and it decides the destination. When the two agree, life feels like it flows. When they disagree, you spend energy on simply being yourself that other people spend on their goals.

Around the mid thirties, many people notice the Conductor starting to take over. Habits that worked in your twenties stop paying off, and the Life Path direction becomes harder to ignore.

Why the Birth Number shows up first

Other people usually meet your Birth Number before anything else. It runs your reflexes: how fast you answer, whether you say yes before thinking, whether you go quiet when a room gets tense.

That makes it the most useful number for understanding friction in close relationships. Arguments at home are rarely about the Life Path. They are almost always two Birth Numbers reacting at speed.

Number by number

What each Birth Number means

Each Mulank is ruled by a planet in the Vedic system, which is where a lot of the traditional interpretation comes from.

  • 1

    Ruled by the Sun

You want to be in charge, and you are usually good at it. Direct, confident and impatient with committees. You take criticism personally even when it is fair, and you would rather do it alone than do it slowly.

  • 2

    Ruled by the Moon

Emotional weather moves through you quickly. You read people well, you smooth things over, and you need a calm home to work from. Your instinct is to keep the peace, which sometimes means agreeing to things you do not want.

  • 3

    Ruled by Jupiter

Optimistic, expressive and drawn to learning. You talk your way through problems and you are good company. Your instinct is to add more, more ideas, more plans, more commitments, until you are carrying too many.

  • 4

    Ruled by Rahu

Unconventional and stubborn in equal measure. You question the rule before you follow it, and you often see the flaw everyone else missed. Your instinct is to resist being managed, which can read as difficult when it is really just caution.

  • 5

    Ruled by Mercury

Quick, communicative and easily bored. You pick things up fast and drop them just as fast. Your instinct is to keep options open, so you delay commitment longer than most people find comfortable.

  • 6

    Ruled by Venus

Warm, aesthetic and family centred. You notice when something is ugly or unfair and you want to fix it. Your instinct is to take responsibility for other people's comfort, which is generous and also exhausting.

  • 7

    Ruled by Ketu

Private, observant and quietly spiritual. You need solitude to think properly. Your instinct is to withdraw when things get emotional, which the people close to you often read as rejection.

  • 8

    Ruled by Saturn

Serious, patient and built for the long game. Results come to you late but they come solidly. Your instinct is to endure rather than complain, which means people rarely know how much you are carrying.

  • 9

    Ruled by Mars

Energetic, protective and quick to anger on behalf of others. You act first and reflect afterwards. Your instinct is to fight for the underdog, which makes you loyal and occasionally lands you in arguments that were never yours.

Questions about the Birth Number

  • Is Mulank the same as Birth Number?

Yes. Mulank is the Hindi term. You will also see it called the psychic number or the driver number. All four names refer to the reduced day of the month you were born.

  • Which is stronger, Birth Number or Life Path Number?

Neither is stronger, they cover different ground. The Birth Number rules your daily instincts and shows up early in life. The Life Path rules your long direction and usually becomes more obvious after your mid thirties.

  • Can two people with the same Birth Number be very different?

Yes, and usually are. The Birth Number is one part of a chart that also includes your Life Path, your name numbers and your grid. Same instinct, different direction, different result.
