Numerology holds that life moves in nine year cycles. Each year in the cycle has a job, and the jobs run in order: start, partner, express, build, change, take responsibility, reflect, harvest, release. Then it begins again.
The Personal Year Number tells you which of those nine you are in. It is the most practical timing number in a chart, because it answers a question people actually ask: is this a good year to start something, or should I wait.
How to calculate your Personal Year Number
Use your birth day, your birth month and the current calendar year.
- 1
Take the day you were born and reduce it to one digit.
- 2
Take the month you were born and reduce it to one digit.
- 3
Take the current year and reduce it to one digit.
- 4
Add the three together and reduce to one digit.
Example for someone born 5 March, during 2026
- Day: 5
- Month: 3
- Year: 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1
- 5 + 3 + 1 = 9
Personal Year 9
Your Personal Year usually turns over on 1 January, though some numerologists switch it on your birthday instead. If a year feels like it arrived late, the birthday version may fit you better.
The nine years in order
Year 1 is for starting. New job, new city, new relationship, new direction. Things begun in a 1 year tend to last.
Year 2 is for partnering and patience. Progress is slow and comes through other people. Pushing hard in a 2 year rarely works.
Year 3 is for expression and visibility. Good for creative work, social life and putting yourself in front of people.
Year 4 is for building. Unglamorous, structural, useful. This is the year that makes years 5 to 9 possible.
Year 5 is for change and movement. Travel, risk, freedom. It is exciting and it is also where people blow up things they built in year 4.
Year 6 is for responsibility, home and family. Weddings, houses, children and caring for parents cluster here.
Year 7 is for reflection and study. Quiet, inward, often lonely. Bad year to force external results, excellent year to figure out what you actually think.
Year 8 is for harvest and money. Effort from earlier years pays off. Also the year with the most pressure attached.
Year 9 is for release. Endings, clearing out, letting go of what is finished. Starting something large in a 9 year usually means restarting it in the 1 year anyway.
Personal Month and Personal Day
The same cycle runs at smaller scales. Add your Personal Year Number to the current month number and you get your Personal Month. Add that to the date and you get your Personal Day.
The months matter more than the days for planning. A 1 month inside a 7 year is still a quiet year, but it is the right week of that year to make the one move you are going to make.
Questions about the Personal Year Number
Does the Personal Year change on 1 January or on my birthday?
Both systems are in use. The 1 January version is more common and is what the app uses. If your years consistently feel like they start a few months late, try the birthday version and see which describes your experience better.
Is a 9 year a bad year?
It is a clearing year, which feels bad if you are trying to build in it and feels excellent if you are trying to finish something. Match the activity to the year and the year stops being a problem.
