Name numerology works on a simple idea: every letter has a number behind it, so every name adds up to something. That total is your Name Number, and it describes the energy people pick up from you before they know anything real about you.
There are two main letter charts in use, and they give different answers. Knowing which one a reading used matters more than most people realise, because comparing a Chaldean result with a Pythagorean one is comparing two different things.
How to calculate your Name Number
Convert each letter to its number, add them all, then reduce.

Chaldean against Pythagorean
The Pythagorean chart is the one most western books use. It runs A to I as 1 to 9, J to R as 1 to 9 again, and S to Z as 1 to 8. It is easy to remember and easy to do in your head.
The Chaldean chart is older and comes from Babylonian practice. It assigns numbers by the sound and vibration of the letter rather than its position in the alphabet, and it never uses 9 for a letter, because 9 was treated as sacred. It is considered more accurate by many practitioners and is harder to memorise.
Neither is wrong. They answer slightly different questions, and serious readings often look at both.
Which version of your name should you use
Use the name you actually go by. If everyone calls you Mike, the vibration you carry every day is Mike, not Michael. That is the name doing the work.
It is still worth calculating your full birth name separately. The birth name shows what you were given. The used name shows what you chose. When the two are very different, the gap usually explains something you already suspected about yourself.
Does changing your name change anything
It changes your Name Number, your Soul Urge, your Personality and your Balance Number, because all four are built from letters. It does not touch your Life Path, your Birth Number or your grid, because those come from your date of birth.
People who change a name for numerological reasons usually report that the effect takes time, because the new name has to actually get used before it becomes the one people say. A name on a certificate that nobody uses carries very little.

Questions about the Name Number
Should I include my middle name?
Include it when calculating your full birth name, and leave it out when calculating the name you go by day to day. The two readings answer different questions.
What about surnames that changed after marriage?
Calculate both. The birth surname shows what you inherited and the married surname shows what you joined. Most people find the current one describes their present life more accurately.
Do spaces, dots and titles count?
No. Only letters carry values. Punctuation, spaces and titles such as Dr or Mr are left out.
