Kua Number Calculator

Your Kua number comes from your year of birth and your gender, and in Feng Shui it gives your four lucky directions. Births before 4 February count as the year before, because the Feng Shui year starts at Li Chun, the start of spring.

How the Kua Number is calculated

  1. 1

Find your Feng Shui year: if you were born before 4 February, use the year before.

  2. 2

Add the digits of that year and reduce them to one digit.

  3. 3

For men, subtract that digit from 11. For women, add 4 to it. Reduce again if needed.

  4. 4

Kua 5 has no direction of its own, so men use 2 and women use 8.

Example for a woman born in 1990

  • 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1
  • Women add 4: 1 + 4 = 5

Questions

  • Why does my gender change my Kua number?

In the Eight Mansions school, men count backwards through the cycle and women count forwards, so the same birth year gives a man and a woman different Kua numbers.

  • I was born on 3, 4 or 5 February. Is my Kua right?

Li Chun falls on 3, 4 or 5 February at a specific hour, which needs a birth time to pin down. Without one, 4 February is the usual boundary, so a birth within a day of it may read one year off. Every other birthday is exact.
